Absolutely. Always. Every time I get on the tractor. I have heard enough horror stories in my life that I don't want to become one. A tractor with ROPS is safer than one without BUT presents a new danger - getting crushed by the ROPS itself in the event of a rollover. Wearing the seatbelt is intended to minimize this possibility.

I am using Shell Rotella 15W-40 for spring/summer/fall in my Ford/NH 1520 which is also equipped with a Japanese 3-cyl diesel. One of the most important things (besides viscosity) is to make sure your oil is rated for a diesel. It will carry a rating such as

Have you ever heard of a Unicorn log splitter? It is a simple, non-hydraulic, screw-type machine that runs direct off the PTO. I have one, and it works really well. Brand-new they run around $400, and I got mine used for $250. Some people have an initial concern about safety, but aside from avoiding loose clothing (always a good idea around a tractor no matter what) the Unicorn is no better or worse than a hydraulic splitter in my opinion.<br>Good luck!

I have a bit of experience here - I own a '48 Ford 8N myself (soon to be for sale to help offset the cost of the Ford/NH 1520 I just picked up). I also follow the Antique Tractor Internet Service mailing list on the internet very closely.<br>Anyway, for a good running 8N by itself, figure $2000-$2500. A trip-bucket loader would add about $500, and a full-hydraulic loader would add about $1000. This assumes good condition (drips are okay, but squirting fluid is a definite no-no!). Wheel weights don't add a whole lot, and I for the blade, for reference, a brand-new Woods 6' rear blade is about $400, so figure $200-250 used.<br>Hope this helps.<br>Steve O.

Sorry to chime in late on this one. A couple methods that haven't been mentioned yet:<br>1) Cable method: Cut tree high, leave a good 5-6' or more above ground. Attach a sturdy cable as high as possible. Run snatch block to nearby solid object such as the very base of larger tree. Pull cable with tractor or better yet winch. Be absolutely sure you understand the mechanics of this arrangement and size the cable and snatch blocks accordingly. A snapped cable can kill someone.<br>2) Stump grinder: pretty inexpensive to rent or to hire. Arguably the fastest and least invasive method (dynamite bothers the neighbors, rotting takes incredible patience).<br>3) Burn them. Never tried it but read about it. Hi, Folks. I was just steered over to this site by my friends on the Antique Tractor List (www.atis.net). This looks like a fantastic resource! I am seriously considering a Ford (not labelled New Holland) 1520 which is currently on duty at a nursery. It is 4WD, Hydrostatic, equipped with 7108 loader. 400 hours, condition very good (some slight cosmetic issues here and there). Only real problem is completely bald front tires from maneuvering on pavement at the nursery. I have looked it over carefully and everything else is in order. My Antique Tractor friends came up with a price from the Hot Line Farm Equipment Guide (kind of like NADA book for used tractor prices) of $7000 average, $6100 low, and $7600 high. I am thinking, due to low hours and good overall condition, of basing my offer near the high end, at about $7500, plus about $2000 for the loader for a total of $9500.
